I leave tomorrow for Boston with Mr. Doughnut_girl;  He's give a talk or two at the New Balance offices;  then we are staying over for the weekend and heading to the shore;  staying a bed and breakfast;  Wed night we are going to the Red Sox v. Tampa Bay game.

We get back on Sunday and leave early Tuesday morning for Palm Beach where he will give a talk at a convention;  we are staying at the Breakers Hotel;  I feel like I need a new wardrobe, just to be there.  :-)

I'm excited.  I have never traveled so much in my life.  He's a good egg;

Nike Human Race - I was in charge of the first 25 or so yards of the finishers chute.  Keep people moving and that I did.  Saw too many hot, tired, sweaty runners.  Too much vomitting for me, too.  I did a good job and had fun.  And got nice and close to Lance and Matthew M. (in the brown bandana and sunglasses)

Oh and I met Laura Dern, who I was not aware of this, but is married to Ben Harper.

I was in Blowing Rock, NC at a Mini Marathon Running Camp that Mr. Doughnut_girl was speaking at, for the past for days;  With regard to my running, I have worked up to 40 minutes at a very slow pace.  Saturday it was the day of the groups long run.  We drove a way to get to where were going, and everyone started their run.  My plan was I'd move up to 60 minutes.  It was an out and back trail and at 45 minutes, I had to force myself to turn around.  

The weather was amazing and the scenery was gorgeous.  I ran 1:31 with absolutely no pain, no whining, nothing.  And that was with me stopping alot on the way back for pictures.  We went over bridges, through the woods, it was wonderfu.

i'm working out slowly and little almost every day;  saturday was 51 minutes on the greenbelt; followed with too much junk food.

sunday was 1:51 ride

today was 35 minutes of cardio at the gym and 45 minutes of weights.  

Thursday, mr. doughnut_girl is leaving to speak at ZAP Fitness Camp in Blowing Rock, NC;  He's speaking at a Marathon Prep Mini Camp they are having.  I'm going with him;  It's my birthday weekend, but I find it ironic that I'm spending my BD at a marathon camp.  :-)

I've got three books to read, it's very very peaceful there, aside from all of the running, that is.  :-)

This is from John Conley, our beloved race director for the Austin Marathon:

Hello friends!

Apologies for this very long note. This is the best summary I can come up with.

As some of you may know, I am on a City Council Task Force that has been charged with finding some remedies to the disruption to downtown traffic caused by special events. The Task Force consists of 16 citizens who represent various stakeholders in the issue.

So here’s the situation:

· Two-thirds of the task force represent ‘aggrieved parties’ who seek to limit and control running events and triathlons.
· I am the only race director on the task force. Paul Carrozza is a co-chair and he is obviously on the side of event promotion.
· Even though over 60% of the special events in the downtown central business district are street festivals or parades, not a single street festival or parade organizer is on the task force.
· It is no longer possible to add new members to the task force.
· The task force will likely take a hard stance on downtown running events but any recommendations adopted by the city council may also be applied city-wide.
· The rich and varied running events that have defined Austin as a ‘fit-city’, generated millions, upon millions of dollars for the local economy and the local non-profit community are at high risk of being over-regulated and in some cases priced out of existence in the next six to twelve months.
· A part of the cultural fabric of our city is in jeopardy.

Here’s the challenge

· If we don’t advocate for our running events, then nobody else will.
· A city council member once remarked to me, that after a race, she only hears from people who are angry and inconvenienced. She never hears from people thanking the city or complimenting a race or the charity that benefitted from the race.
· If this task force rolls with the two-third majority bias, running events in Austin will be regulated out of existence in some cases and will be priced out of existence in other cases.
· If we can get 18,000 people out to run the Cap 10K or 22,000 people out to run the Komen Race for the Cure, then can we get 100 people to email City Council Members this week, to tell them that running events are important to this community and our non-profits? Can we get 100 people to come to the next Task Force Meeting and the one after that and the one after that one until we make our point that runners are not anonymous or invisible people. Can we get 10 people at each meeting to get on the citizens communication part of the agenda to tell the task force of how important running events are to them personally?

If we can make our voices heard, then perhaps we can re-establish the balance that is missing in the composition of the task force.

I think the task force is composed of some of the city’s best and brightest and every one of the aggrieved has a legitimate complaint and a solution needs to be generated that reflects a true compromise. We will get there, but so far, the only public energy that has been mustered is from the side that would like to see Austin running events go away.

The silence of the runners is deafening.

In the last three meetings, the only people speaking during the citizens communication part of the agenda are angry, aggrieved people.

No runners or race organizers have spoken. [However, Jann Girard from the Cap 10K and Brad Davidson from the Cap Tex Tri spoke eloquently as invited guests last night, but nobody from the gallery represented a race or a runner during the citizens communication].

I would like to ask you to contact 5 of your running buddies and ask them to attend one or more of our task force meetings. I would ask that they let the chairman know that they would like to address the task force for 3 minutes during the citizens communication period. 10 people are allowed to speak at this time. They can say anything they want and the task force will listen. They might want to give the task force three simple messages:

1. Running events benefit the city economy and its non-profits.
2. Running events help define Austin as a fit and desirable city
3. Running events contribute to the health and wellness of the entire community.

If they don’t wish to speak, their presence will still be noted by the task force.

The task force’s work will take months and won’t likely end this year. However, we need runners to take an interest in this process and make their voices heard.

We will also mount a similar strategy to address the City Council directly once the task force has finished its work.

The next Street Event Closure task Force Meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 11 at 5:00 p.m. in room 1029 at City Hall. Parking is validated.

The task force will meet on an every-other-Monday schedule, always at the same time. I will alert you to any changes.

Please let me know if you are willing to come and if you or others would like to be put on the citizens communication part of the agenda. Meetings usually last 2 hours but the citizens communication period is first on the agenda and is over in 15 to 20 minutes.

Women's Tri

I now consider any time I actually do a workout, whether, just a workout or a race, an accomplishment for me.

The Women's Tri, while "fun" it was not, b/c it was so hot, but it was "fun" because Mr. Doughnut_girl and youngest boy child was there.

When I crossed the finish line my youngest was there passing out water. He, on his own, decided he was bored and wanted to help. Shocking.

And now he's talking about doing a tri, relay style with me. Makes me happy.

Loved all the bright colors and decorations at the race.

Next up, Sweet and Twisted Tri. :-)

Oh and we saw The Dark Knight. Amazing.

weekend misc

Mr. Doughnut_girl and I did the Couples Tri. I was nervous on the swim, but actually more clued in on how giddy I was to be there with my husband. :-)

It was fun for both of us.

This morning, I ran 3 miles at the trail. I'm still trying to run some in the morning.

I realized this weekend, I'm to the "base building" point. Where I was when I first started running. Being able to run 3 or 4 miles with ease. It's weird. But now that I realize that, I'm set.

yet another animal

Beth, my boss, also one of my closest friends now, does wildlife rescue. birds, squirrels, things like that.

She's always bringing babies to the office that need to be feed throughout the day. I'm a pro now at it, as she leaves them in my office.

They all have names.

I was at her house last week and looking at the ones that can self feed but are too young to be set free. In with them was a racing pigeon. With a broken wing, that won't heal properly to allow him to fly. He's got a number around his leg, and the owner was called and they didn't want him anymore cuz he can't fly.

I've made him mine. Piggee Poo. She's or it she a He?, anyway, He/She is white with light brown markings. Piggee Poo lets me pet her. Not like dog petting, but gentle petting.

i have been trying to work out more. not longer workouts, just working out. running has been crippled by the foot injury which is much better and now the heat.

however, i am taking baby steps by running in the morning, only 20 or 25 minutes. it's a start and it leaves the nights free for swimming or riding. baby steps.

29 minutes later I finished the Howdy Du. I had somehow over the week gotten a few more minutes of a handicap from Mr. Doughnut_girl, but still lost the competition.

He was much better on the bike then we thought he would be and his run after the bike was a no brainer.

He's hooked. :-)

Next is Couple's Tri, but we are a team, not competition. :-)

I had a great race yesterday though. Really pushed the first run and bike. I'm happy.

Thanks to Cam for putting the defensive hold on Mr. Doughnut_girl at the water stop. That helped.

Oh and when he was was on his mountain bike some moran idiot came up from behind and said "that bike is a f****ing joke, get a real bike"

I'm still stunned. and no, he didn't get his bib number.

I conned, err, I mean convinced Mr. Doughnut_girl to give me a bigger handicap. Used the ol' "it's that time of the month" excuse. :-)

This is going to be so fun! When I got home last night we has just finished his "test" ride on the mountain bike. He borrowed some of my bike shorts. They were baggy on him. That was reason enough for me to win the race.

Friendly competition

Here's why:
1) He hasn't ridden a bike in 20 plus years.

OK, probably not reason enough, but the smack talk is fun. I know my transition time and bike time will be faster, but probably not fast enough to make up his 6 minute miles.

I did get him to give me a 5 minute handicap for the overall time though.

And he is riding a mountain bike. :-)

weekend stuff

Wow! to crabby and leah!!!!

Still in awe and so proud.

I was in Duluth, MN with Mr. Doughnut_girl to be part of the Grandma's Marathon. It is so gorgeous there. I ran along Lake Superior two days in 58 degree weather. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Rode in the lead vehicle with Mr. Doughnut_girl while he did the radio announcing for the race. It was fun, fun, fun.

I'm happy to be home with all of our pets.
